Common questions
Vigil can't find any devices
Vigil needs permission to look at your Wi-Fi. Open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, tap Local Network, and turn on Vigil. Make sure your phone is on your home Wi-Fi, not mobile data, then scan again.
Some of my devices are missing
Some devices sleep to save power, and some hide from scans on purpose. Wake the device up (turn on the TV, open the app for the camera) and scan again. Devices on a guest network won't show up.
A device shows as "Unknown"
Not every device says what it is. You can tap it and give it a nickname so you'll recognize it next time. If you can't tell what it is at all, try unplugging things one at a time and scanning again.
The outside check says something is open
That means a device in your home can be reached from the internet. Tap the result to see a step-by-step guide for closing it. If you're not sure, it's usually safe to ask your internet provider for help and show them the screen.
Does the outside check scan other people?
No. Our server only checks the internet address your request came from, which is your own home connection. It can't be pointed anywhere else.
Is the password check safe?
Yes. Your password never leaves your phone. Vigil sends only a small piece of a scrambled code, so nobody can tell what you typed. Read more in our privacy policy.
Does Vigil work on mobile data?
The checkup is about your home Wi-Fi, so connect to it first. On mobile data Vigil can't see your home network.
Delete your data
In Vigil, tap the person icon, then Delete account. That deletes your account and everything our server keeps for it. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a Plus subscription, so cancel it in Settings first. Then delete the app to remove what's on your phone.
