A device has something risky turned on. Is it urgent?

Lesson 2 of 2 in Devices

It means it accepts connections that are easy to abuse, such as Telnet. Turn that feature off in the device's app or settings, or update it. Vigil's fix steps show how.

Why It Matters

Features like Telnet, an old way to control a device from afar, send everything without scrambling it, even passwords, and are a favorite target for attackers.

What To Do

  1. Follow the fix steps in Vigil for that device.
  2. Open the device's app or settings and install any update.
  3. Turn off the risky feature, often listed under remote access or advanced settings.
  4. If the device still uses its factory password, change it.
  5. If the maker no longer updates it, think about replacing it.
