Vigil Learn › Email And Passwords

My email was in a breach. What now?

Lesson 1 of 3 in Email And Passwords

A company you used leaked data that included your email. Change the password for that account, and anywhere you used the same one. Then mark it as dealt with in Vigil.

Why It Matters

Criminals try leaked passwords on other sites, because many people reuse them. Changing them quickly closes that door.

What To Do

  1. Change the password for the account that was in the breach.
  2. Change it anywhere else you used the same password, starting with your email.
  3. Turn on two-step sign-in for that account if it offers it.
  4. Watch out for emails that mention the breach and ask you to click a link. Go to the site yourself instead.
  5. Mark the breach as dealt with in Vigil.
