Vigil Learn › Your Wi-Fi And Router
My router has known security holes. Now what?
Attackers already use these holes. Update the router from its app or settings page. If the maker no longer sends updates, it's time for a new router, or ask your internet provider for one.
Why It Matters
Your router is the front door between your home and the internet. If it has a known hole, attackers don't have to guess how to get in.
What To Do
- Open your router's app or settings page and look for an update option, usually called Firmware Update or Router Update.
- Install any update, and turn on automatic updates if the router offers it.
- If no update exists, check the maker's support website for your model. If it says the model is no longer supported, plan to replace it.
- If your internet provider gave you the router, call them and ask for a newer one.
- Run the checkup again to confirm the warning is gone.
