Why does the internet check say I'm on a VPN?

Lesson 4 of 4 in Your Checkup

The internet check looks at your home connection from the outside. A VPN or iCloud Private Relay hides your home, so Vigil can't check it. Turn the VPN off, make sure you're on your home Wi-Fi, and run the checkup again.

Why It Matters

A VPN is an app or service that sends your internet traffic through another company's computer. That's good for privacy, but it means the outside check sees that company, not your home.

What To Do

  1. Turn off your VPN for now, in your VPN app or in Settings > VPN.
  2. If you use iCloud+, turn off Private Relay in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay.
  3. Check that you're connected to your home Wi-Fi in Settings > Wi-Fi.
  4. Run the checkup again, then turn your VPN or Private Relay back on.

Check your own home

Vigil by Cortex is a weekly Wi-Fi checkup for iPhone. One tap checks every device on your Wi-Fi and what the internet can see, then shows you what to fix, step by step.
